My Lampwork Journey

Updated: Sep 1, 2022

In August 2011 I visited a friend’s Lampwork studio and had to have a go, from melting that first bit of glass and creating my first wonky bead I was obsessed. Within a fortnight I had my very own basic studio in my garden, when I say basic I mean a few rods of glass and a handheld mixed gas torch that could make only the tiniest beads.

Over the next few months I purchased second hand equipment and glass, collecting some bargains along the way. A kiln for £50 which is still going strong today, a huge collection of vintage glass rods for £35 that began another obsession with collecting discontinued glass.

Over the next 8 years I practiced bead making as a hobby, desperately trying to build up sales of my beads but never really making it past the hobby stage. I was disheartened at so many points but while I was barely covering costs, lampworking and sharing my beads with jewellery makers made me so happy.

I began building up a small following for my beads and things very suddenly began to take off with my novelty bead sales. After a few busy months we went into lockdown where I was able to dedicate much more time and energy into creating my novelty beads as demand soared.

Fast forward to now, working a demanding day job and juggling increasing bead orders was no longer working. Making beads is where I'm happy. I am finally bringing in a stable income and at a place where I am comfortable to take on lampworking fulltime.

The launch of Sand Soda Lime now also marks my last day in my Team leader position. It is a big step, but with my amazing customers and support I'm looking forward to what the future will bring in my fulltime lampwork journey.

Thank you to each and every one of you that has helped me reach this dream and welcome to those who will help it continue.

Thank You!! Thank You!! Thank You!!
